Peking University Signs Historic Agreement with Surmang Foundation/amara
Surmang Foundation/amara signed a partnership agreement today with Institute of Population Studies, Peking University. Peking University is among the top institutions of higher education in China. The partnership agreement is a major step in establishing a model network of 30 clinics based on the Surmang prototype. This model is focused on mother and child health and includes regional health centers, free medical care and free medicine, distance medical education, virtual communities of doctors, remote diagnosis, public health education in public schools. Due to extreme geographical remoteness and poverty, most ultra-poor in China have no access to quality health care.
Peking University will provide an assessment funded by a recent ÂY500,000 grant from the American Chamber of Commerce, China. The results of that assessment will contribute PKU's prestige and put its official imprimatur on Surmang/amara, helping to elevate the visibility and status of this planned health network. Institute of Population Studies, Peking University, is a major advisor to the Chinese MInistry of Health on rural health reform policy. The Chinese government has recently embarked on a reform of rural health policy that will allow alternative models for community-based health provision such as amara's.

Surmang Signs Agreement with the Wu Jie Ping Foundation of the Ministry of Health of China
We are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement with the Wu Jie Ping Foundation of the Ministry of Health of China. The agreement calls for the creation of an umbrella organization to be called China Rural Health Alliance. This organization will be the container for strategic solutions to the rural health care crisis in China. Rural China has 28 million people who live on less than US$0.10 per day. Another 100 million live on less than US$1.00/ day. Included in the former are all 5 million ethnic Tibetans. Maternal mortality among ethnic Tibetans claims over 2500 women a year.
The new organization will be an alliance of government, non-profit, and multinational corporations. The strategic solutions include the major goals of creating better access to services and increased capacity for care providers. In particular this means the creation of a network of 30 remote clinics, connected by IT, as well as distance medical education to support medical provider training, remote diagnosis and consultation. Surmang Foundation will be the driving force in this alliance, and all of our projects, will be supported by this initiative. Dharma Sagara Clinic will expand to become a pilot project featuring include in-patient building, expanded solar pv capacity, staff housing and a doctor training center.
According to Lee Weingrad, "In the last 10 years Surmang Foundation has treated over 60,000 patients for free. With this initiative, in 10 more years we can say we have treated over 2,000,000. To give an indication of the size of the problem if all 28 million moved to Europe, they would be the 6th largest country." The agreement is timely, since Chinese Premier Hu Jiantao recently announced a major overhaul of China's rural health delivery system. Human services are the largest sector of the Chinese economy and health care is the largest sector of human services, attracting powerful foreign investment both in services and health care infrastructure.
